Immigration Evaluations

What are Immigration Evaluations?

Immigration Evaluations are mental health evaluations provided by a therapist for an immigration legal case. These evaluations help to capture details of a person's story that may be missed otherwise, including the impact of trauma on functioning and safety.

What cases am I able to evaluate?

Mahina Therapy is able to complete mental health evaluations related to a multitude of cases, including Asylum, Extreme Hardship Waivers, VAWA (domestic violence), T Visas, and U Visas

What does the evaluation process look like?

The first step in the evaluation process is consulting with your legal team. Please consult with your legal team to determine if you need an evaluation for your case. We will work with both your immigration lawyer and yourself to complete the evaluation.

After you or your lawyer request an evaluation, we will send you informed consent paperwork to complete prior to your first appointment, as well as assessment forms that will give us an idea of where to focus our conversation in our interview.

We will conduct 1 to 2 interviews with you through a secure video platform. Your evaluation may take 1 to 1.5 hours per interview session. We compete biopsychosocial assessments, which covers mental and physical health, personal and family history, cultural and systemic frameworks, experiences with trauma, and the background for your immigration case.

After the first interview, we will determine if more time is needed or if we have enough information to write your report.

After we finish the evaluation interviews, we will then write a report which generally ranges from 10-12 pages. You can expect to receive your finalized report within 2 weeks after the second interview.

Payment is due at the time of your first scheduled appointment. The final evaluation will be submitted to your lawyer once the fee is paid in full.
