Neurodivergent-Affirming Autism Assessments
Mahina Therapy offers neurodivergent-affirming autism assessments for adults!
There are natural differences in the way that human brains develop and work, and that spectrum of neurodiversity should be accommodated rather than pathologized. We believe that different ways of thinking should be celebrated rather than discouraged, and that belief is at the core of neurodivergent-affirming assessments. We view each person’s unique brain, way of being, and way of experiencing the world as valid and worthy of being understood. Her goal in providing these assessments is to help people better get to know their internal experience and the ways in which they show up in the world, and to feel empowered in understanding themselves and their needs.
As a neurodivergent provider, Kaylee brings their personal understanding of neurodivergence, along with her professional training, to these assessments. They aim to be inclusive of the impact of differing sociocultural identities, including gender and cultural background.
What Does the Assessment Process Look Like?
The assessment process takes place over the course of 5 sessions, on average.
Session 1: Intake Session
During this session, we'll talk about what you are looking for out of this process (goals) and go over the logistics of scheduling, fees, etc. I'll also provide you with different assessment questionnaires to fill out.
Sessions 2 - 4: Clinical Interview
During these sessions, we'll review your answers to the assessment questionnaires provided in the first session and discuss your perspectives on neurodivergence, including what brought you to this assessment process.
We'll talk about your individual experiences that relate to neurodivergence, including your mental health history, sense of self, skills, interests, and sensory profile.
We'll also talk about your relational experiences that relate to neurodivergence, including your family history, social connections, and sense of community. This includes looking at your experiences in larger systems, such as academics and the workplace.
Session 5: Feedback Session
During this session, we'll talk about what we've come to understand about your experience from the assessment process, including the applicability of an official diagnosis, and discuss what this might mean for you moving forward. As part of this process, we will write a formal diagnostic report for you and we will review that report together in this session.
Fees
Out of Pocket:
For those paying out of pocket, we charge a flat fee of $1,000 for the assessment process and diagnostic report
**Sliding scale and payment plans are available upon request**
Insurance:
Mahina Therapy is able to bill insurance for this assessment process! Please see Fees and Insurance for covered insurances.
ADHD Assessments
If you'd also like to be assessed for ADHD, Mahina Therapy is able to offer a combined assessment! This would mean adding an additional session and the out of pocket fee would increase to $1,200.
What does it mean to be assessed by a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) or Marriage & Family Therapist Associate and not a Psychologist?
Kaylee is an LMFT in WA, OR, and HI.
An LMFT is a licensed clinician with a Master’s degree. A Marriage & Family Therapist Associate is a registered clinician with a Master’s degree who is supervised by a fully licensed clinician. Both an LMFT and a Marriage & Family Therapist Associate are able to diagnose any diagnosis in the DSM with adequate training.
While an LMFT or Marriage & Family Therapist Associate can provide Autism assessments if they have the training & experience, some schools or workplaces may require documentation from a Psychologist for accommodations. If you’re seeking out this assessment for accommodations specifically, please check with your school or workplace first to determine if documentation from an LMFT or Marriage & Family Therapist Associate is adequate.
